Seresin Estate – Wine of passion, grace and spirit

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are top choices for Christmas. Seresin Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2014 and Rachel Pinot Noir 2012 are two smart, elegant options from Marlborough estate of cinematographer Michael Seresin. Whether purchased as a thoughtful gift or to be enjoyed at home, these distinguished vintages are perfect for any given occasion.

A desire to make wine as naturally as possible was at the heart of cinematographer Michael Seresin’s vision when he created the Seresin winery in 1992. Seresin Estate combines old world viticulture with new world energy and enthusiasm. The three vineyards Noa, Raupo Creek and Tatou, a total of 160 hectares, are certified organic and biodynamic, making Seresin the largest biodynamic winery in New Zealand.

Working in harmony with nature - vegetables and olive trees are grown alongside the grapes whilst livestock are free to roam the vineyards.  The must from the grapes and the olives are made into compost to use in the vineyards.  Natural elements such as the use of wild yeasts help elicit a true character in their wines.

The grapes for Seresin Estate Chardonnay Reserve are handpicked from the rich clay-based slopes Raupo Creek vineyard in the Omaka Valley.  The 2014 vintage is full of concentration and poise, backed with firm acidity and salty minerality. The nose is savoury and complex. The oak is finely balanced with just a hint of warm orchard fruit. Based around firm acidity and structure.

The estate now grows seven varieties’ of white grape, but it’s the Pinot Noir that excites Seresin the most.  Seresin Estate Rachel Pinot Noir is a blend of the best fruit from all three vineyards.  Named after Michael Seresin’s mother.  The 2012 vintage was produced during one of the coolest years on record in Marlborough.  It has aromas of black cherry, truffle and chocolate while the palate is concentrated and full. Silky-fine and mouth-coating tannins underpin a dense core of rich fruit, alongside savoury spice and herbal notes.  It is long on the finish with a cleansing acidity; this is a poised, yet powerful wine.

It is Michael Seresin’s passion for organics, wine and food that forms the foundation of everything that Seresin Estate represent, perceiving the biodynamic farming philosophy founded by Steiner in 1942 as essentially an ancestral method of agriculture that has been practised in Europe for centuries.  The earth is treated as a living organism and not a medium for chemicals.

Defining itself as a new world winery with an old world approach, Seresin Estate adheres to every biodynamic and organic tradition, which lends the brand much of its magic and mystery as well as its implacable credentials.

Notes to Editor:

Born and raised in New Zealand, Michael Seresin emigrated to Europe in 1966 to pursue a career in film.  It was here, when he took a house in Italy, that he fell in love with wine.   A desire to make wine as naturally as possible was at the heart of Michael’s vision when he created the Seresin winery in 1992.  The vines were planted and Seresin Estate’s first vintage was bottled four years later.  Two decades later, Seresin Estate, with its trademark hand-print label, has grown to become the largest biodynamic wine company in New Zealand.
