Seresin's New Release Pinot Noir

Each of these wines manifests the terroir of our three vineyards and combined with our biodynamic viticulture and winemaking, encompasses an old world culture in a new world setting.

The Vintage

Vintage 2013 was ideal for Seresin’s Pinot Noir. A calm spring followed by an early summer ensured even flowering and berry set. A cooler post-veraison period and consequent slow ripening helped the fruit retain its acidity whilst developing more complex flavour compounds.

The Vineyards

Noa is our original vineyard, situated over two terraces in the free-draining silty Wairau Valley alluvial soils around our winery.

Raupo Creek is located in the Omaka Valley. Our vines are planted on the north facing steep slope on clay rich, heavier soil, ideal for Pinot Noir.

Tatou sits where the Waihopai and Wairau Valleys meet, with a variety of shingle and gravel soils.

The Winemaking

All grapes are handpicked, and hand sorted, prior to destemming. After a couple days of steeping pre-fermentation, the juice is warmed and fermented naturally, using wild (indigenous) yeasts. The wines remain on skins for 20 to 30 days after fermentation, during which time they are hand-plunged twice daily. The wines are lightly pressed to a mix of French oak barriques, where they undergo natural malolactic fermentation, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Wines

2014 Seresin Estate Leah Pinot Noir

A blend of fruit from our three vineyards. Leah’s bright, fragrant berry-fruit aromas are interlaced with spice and herbal notes. Leah is focused and concentrated wine, with a succulent fruit core that is framed by fine-grained tannins and a mouth-watering acidity. Named for Michael Seresin’s daughter, this is an elegant and understated style with immediate appeal and a lasting structure. Drink now until 2025.

2013 Seresin Estate Rachel Pinot Noir

The main portion of fruit for this wine, named for Michael Seresin’s mother Rachel, is from our clay-rich Omaka Valley hillside vineyard, Raupo Creek. The balance comes from the alluvial shingles of our Tatou and Noa vineyard. The nose exhibits aromas of black cherry, truffle and chocolate. The palate is concentrated and full, with a dense core of rich fruit, alongside savoury spice and herbal notes, all underpinned by silky-fine and mouth-coating tannins. Long on the finish, with a cleansing acidity, this is a poised, yet powerful wine. Drink now until 2025.

2013 Seresin Estate Raupo Creek Pinot Noir

The hand tended vines on the steep north facing clay rich Raupo Creek vineyard, pruned to one bunch per vine, provide the fruit for this Raupo Creek Pinot Noir wine. This wine has a concentrated palate, with deep earth, spice and hedgerow fruit characters, framed by fine, well-integrated tannins and a persistent, fresh finish. The nose exhibits notes of ripe dark berry fruit, alongside hints of savoury forest floor, rosemary and leather. Drink now until 2025.

2013 Seresin Estate Tatou Pinot Noir

Our Tatou vineyard has stony and free draining soils, with a mixture of large rocks and fine gravels. This 2013 Pinot Noir has aromas of wild hedgerow fruit, with undertones of spice, earth and dried herb. The palate is concentrated and dense, with finely-grained tannins giving a robust structure to softly rounded and fragrant rosehip and bramble. Elegant and expressive, the finish is long and savoury. Drink now until 2028.

2013 Seresin Estate Noa Pinot Noir

Noa is our origional vineyard. The source of beautiful fruit, from our oldest vines. Growing on a mix of fine silt and free-draining gravels. The nose of this wine is aromatic, with cassis layered over fresh herbal and floral notes. On the palate, it has an intense core of fragrant red stone fruit, underpinned by finely-expressed tannins, wood smoke notes and hints of spice. It is refined, but with the framework to age well. Drink now until 2025.

2013 Seresin Estate Sun & Moon Pinot Noir

This is the purest expression of Pinot Noir we can make. The vines are bunch thinned to less than 1kg of fruit per vine. It is savoury and complex. A wine made with a long ageing potential. The supple tannins provide structure for rich and succulent fruit weight, creating a balance between power and elegance. Drink now until 2030.
